Yucan's Commitment to Well-being Support for Young Carers and Youth in Schools
At Yucan, we are wholeheartedly dedicated to enhancing the well-being of young carers in schools across East London. The spring of 2023 brought about a pivotal moment as schools embarked on a mission to recognise and identify young carers, a group too frequently overlooked.
We are enthusiastic about the opportunity to partner with more schools to offer vital support to these remarkable young individuals. Young carers, often quietly shouldering significant responsibilities at home, rightly deserve recognition, understanding, and the chance to flourish.
Our mission perfectly aligns with the important shift as schools include young carers in their census data. However, we acknowledge that there remains a substantial underreporting of young carers in schools. Many educators may not fully grasp who young carers are or how to identify signs of a young person needing support accurately.
Research underscores the urgency of this issue, with over 10% of all students providing care to loved ones at home, whether it's due to disability, mental health challenges, language translation, bereavement, sibling responsibility, or other factors. These young carers juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, often at the cost of their well-being and education.
Yucan is dedicated to bridging this gap and ensuring that no young carer goes unnoticed or unsupported in their pursuit of well-being and education.
Our school programmes cover wellbeing activities like baking, mindfulness techniques, physical activities, assemblies, respite trips, care packages, first aid training for youth and much more!
